Emergency Project Proposal (November 2004 - March 2005)
The Ethiopian Catholic Church and in this particular case the Eparchy of Adigrat has always been to the forefront in responding to emergencies of all kinds. In recent years, however, responses to emergencies has taken on a mainly new dimension in the sense that relief has become related to developmental activities. Nevertheless, the disabled and handicapped are not excluded. The present emergency is now dealt with:- Situation:
This emergency arises from the current drought (2004 - 2005). Government officials assessed the drought situation in three districts of the eastern zone of Tigray. Their findings revealed that the yield in the farmers' crops had been reduced by amounts ranging from 51% to 80%.
Some examples: (1 quintal = 100 kg).
One area: anticipated harvest: 163,171 quintals.
actual harvest: 79,415 quintals.
Another area: anticipated harvest: 5,104 quintals.
actual harvest: 1,024 quintals.
Consequently, farmers had begun selling their productive assets; some farmers had started migrating.
- Objectives:
- To save human lives and livelihoods of 18,826 individuals through provision of job opportunities in the form of cash-for-work:
- To respond to the chronic food deficiency by rehabilitating agricultural and environmental resource bases with the aim of improving agricultural productivity in the future.
- Activities: Cash-for-work benefiting 18,826 individuals (female 8,283; male 10,543).
- Check dams: 116 constructions
- Hillside terracing: total length 216 km
- Road construction: 50 km
- Road maintenance: 30 km
- Reservoir construction: 1 reservoir providing easy access to water for
2,500 livestock.
- Health education to 18,000 individuals concerning HIV/AIDS.
Caritas Switzerland , Caritas Luxemburg, CAFOD, Secours Catholique and TROCAIRE fund this project.
