Integrated water resources and rural development

 

Mekele: The goal is to improve the health status of 16,500 people in six districts of Kilite Awaleo and Inderta weredas. By the end of July 2006, 16,500 people will have access to potable water, environmental sanitation and personal hygienic practices.

Adigrat: Physical soil and water conservation, and these undertakings include The Adigrat Diocesan Development Action (ADDA) as directed by Dr. Bruno Strebel. This programme comprises irrigation, infiltration galleries at various sites, and the building of a dam over 40 mts high at Assabol is in progress.

By 2006 field crop production will have increased by 30%.

By the year 2006 the potable water supply in the district will have increased from 27% in 2003 to 38%.

The beneficiaries are estimated to be 4,283 households:

Caritas Switzerland , MISEREOR and Secours Catholique funded the development of integrated water resources.

Caritas Italiana and Caritas Bergamo funded the integrated rural development project.

Development Assistance Programme II (DAP II)

This is a programme that will take at least four years of endeavour.

Project Goal: Improved Household Food Security.

Objectives:

- Improved Family Health.

- Sustainable Increased Agricultural Production and Productivity.

Agriculture, health, sanitation as well as associated development activities are included in this extensive programme. Beneficiaries: 40,424 individuals (9,138 households).

This project is funded by CRS.

Enhancing livelihood Security

The aim is to mitigate the impact of recurring drought emergencies on people who are insecure for food.

By December 2004 farming profitability and resilience to drought will have increased by 25% for 32,546 beneficiaries. By that time also access to water for those beneficiaries will have increased by 30%. Over the next four to five years the aim is to improve the health of 2,243 children. Increased agricultural production and productivity is also targeted.

The beneficiaries will be in the region of 40,400 individuals (9,138 households).

May Zeg-zeg and Adidaero watershed management

Location: May Zeg-zeg, Dogua, Temben, central zone Tigray Region.

Over 400 ha will be treated with site-specific water conservation techniques, including physical and biological techniques. About 37,883 trees will be planted on 240 ha of cropland. Beneficiaries will be about 17,700.

This project is funded by TROCAIRE

Location: Adidaero, Enderta

Goal: Improved food security for 729 households, of which 119 are female headed.

This project is funded by CRS/ET.

Increasing Food Security Through Intensification and Diversification

Objective: Food security through intensification and diversification of agricultural produce.

Means: Irrigation development and home gardening, crop and livestock production, bees and poultry and developing potable water sources.

Thanks to Caritas Belgium and Belgium Survival Fund there will be about 10,000 household beneficiaries.
